My birthday gift to BowtotheDrow (happy birthday)

Alex sat under the big oak tree behind his house; it was rare he had time to be alone.  It hard had to write for his dragon companions, even harder when they ate him while he was writing.  Alex sighed taking in the fresh air, listening to the sounds of the forest as he wrote down the latest events between Sterling and Embyr.  Alex's real reason for being out was because he had been kicked out of his house, it was his birthday and of course his friends wanted to set up the party in secret.  He actually was too excited for his party, even if it meant he would most likely be eaten by one of his guests.

Today's a perfect day thought Alex as the warm air grew cool by the wind, making the early morning air the perfect temperature.  Alex writing the paragraph then decided to take a nap in the shade of the oak tree.

....................

Yawning Alex awoke as he gazed at his watch 10:03 am, Damn the party doesn't start till noon. He thought, what am I going to do for two hours?  A branch snapped over to his left as someone approached.  He half expected Liz or one of his other dragon friends to come out of the brush, but instead a blue scaled dragon appeared one he had never met.  Her scales where beautiful shades of blue, her eyes spoke to him it was like starring into deep pools of water that never seemed to end.  She walked over to Alex on her fours she was a different kind of dragon he was used to seeing.

"Alex?" She said in her beautifully soft voice, the sound of her voice left him speechless resulting in a sheepish nod.

"Are you the one they call 'Drow'?"

"Yes, but you can call me Alex."  He said finally finding his words as he faced the dragoness.

"I'm called Cynthia.  A friend of yours sent me here to find you, I have come from a very far land."  Cynthia had a night black staff in her claws, attached was a note.  She handed the staff to Alex as he admired the work, the staff was six feet high, near the top a dark red gem almost as dark as the wood sat absorbing the sun's energy.  Scratched in gold along one side of the gem it said, "In Nigrum Terrorem" and along the other side of the red gem it said in an English translation, "The Black Terror".  Alex pulled off the note quickly opened it and read:

           Dear Alex,

I thought this would be appropriate don't you.  Now you can fly with dragons, enjoy the sky's may you never want to leave.  Remember this phrase:

"Say 'Vindr' strong and loud.

If you ever want to get off the ground."

I hope you enjoy both of your gifts.

                 Your friend,

                          The 'Shadow'

Alex tapped the staff on the ground, he jumped as the wings and tail extended showing its equally dark wings.  Along the wooden frame that held the wings where smaller red gems which caused the wooden frames to glow as the energy connected to the main gem.  Alex could feel the power in the wood as it connected to him, it was like the staff was a being of its own what was weird was the being felt familiar like he had created the conciseness.  It felt like Embyr's being, it's proud, loving, character that Alex knew so well.  How am I going to close the wings? Alex thought but almost instantly the wings began to close, once again becoming a staff.

"What's the other gift?"  Asked Alex as he held onto The Black Terror.

"He said you would ask about that." Cynthia said handing him another note.  It read:

           Drow,

If you are reading this then you have revived my gifts, I hope you enjoy them as much as I did when I took care and made them.  Now your second and main gift is standing before you....  Alex looked up at Cynthia in sure of his friends words...  Cynthia has lived under my care and protection for many years, but she has a painful past and reluctantly I have agreed with her to leave.  As much as it pains me to see her go I know that she will be safe under your care, this is her and my gift to you.

              S.

Alex looked at Cynthia then back at the letter hoping to clarify their intentions.

            "I don't understand." Alex said.

"I'm your other gift silly." She said giggling as she pushed Alex with her snout causing Alex to stumble as he regained his balance, "Happy Birthday Alex."  She said moving to sit down beside him in the shade of the oak.

"Did he force you to leave your home for me?" He asked her

"No, in fact I owe him my life he has saved me many times from dragon slayers.  No, I needed to leave my home was no longer safe so after months of discussion I agreed to find a new home.  He said he knew you and that this place was safe so here was best area to head to."

"What do you mean your home wasn't safe anymore?"

"Well it was kinda burned down by angry dragon slayers."  Cynthia said, showing sorrow for her loss Alex had no chose but to offer sanctuary for the homeless dragon.  He sat close to Cynthia as she readied to take a nap, tired from her long flight she fell asleep.  The clearing was filled with the steady sound of her breathing, Alex picked up his notebook and got back to finishing his chapter.  Which proved hard to do because Cynthia's scales reflected blue light over the white paper, he sighed but continued to write even if the light caused his eyes to hurt.

...................

An hour till the party.  Alex thought as he looked at his watch, his chapter was almost finished.

"What are you writing?" Cynthia asked awakening from her nap she yawned exposing her sharp teeth, she looked similar to a stretching cat.

"Just finishing up a chapter about my friend's adventures.  Specifically Embyr and her boyfriend Sterling."  Alex explained his book to Cynthia who seemed to absorb every word.

"I may have to read this book you have written, now if only they were made in my size." She chuckled at her joke, "How long till the party?"

         "Around fifty minuets. Why?"

"Do you care to play a game?"

"What kind of game did you have in mind?"

"What about a little hunt.  You try to evade me and I will come after you in fifteen minutes."  Alex being reminded of the same game with Venom and Embyr he already knew this game.

         "What happens if I win."

"Well, if you win I will grant you one favor.  If I win well I think you’re seeing how this is going."  Cynthia said licking her chops as she finished that sentence.

"Agreed."  Alex said and set off into the forest already aware he would most likely lose this game.  Cynthia sat watching him as he disappeared into the brush she took deep breaths keeping track of Alex's unique sent as he scrambled into the woods.

....................

Alex arrived at the river, his breath quick as he tried to think on how to evade Cynthia.  The river was shallow but was clear from the mountain runoff, sitting next to the river was a large cliff filled with many holes some large enough for him to hide in.  Five minutes. Alex noted whatever he did would have to be fast.  Then it hit him, he walked over to the river and began grabbing the stinky mud.  Alex grinned as he thought out the plan of his escape.

.....................

Time Cynthia thought as she began her turn of the game, she followed the foot prints Alex had made in the soft earth.  Cynthia arrived at the river quicker then Alex ever could she took in the surroundings as she looked for clues about her preys location.  Where are you. She thought looking at the mud, she saw his prints in the mud they led off into the woods but his scent was pointing her towards the cliff.  It’s a ruse. She thought, another sent filled the air it was the river mud mixed with Alex's scent it was moving through the woods.  She chuckled as she followed her nose leading her toward her prey. Odd. She thought as his prints where still visible, I figured he would be good at this game considering some of his friends are dragons.  She discontinued the thought think it might be not possible for him to try and hide his tracks in this terrain.  She left the river behind as she continued the hunt.

.................

Ha she fell for it.  Alex thought as he watched Cynthia leave the river from his hiding hole in the cliff face.  His shirt served as the perfect decoy especially combined with his prints, though it was a gamble if Cynthia had chosen to inspect the cliff he would have lost then and there.  Alex moved down the rock face now for step two. He thought as he reached the river again, he now applied the mud to his clothes attempting to hide his sent before Cynthia discovered his ruse.

.................

"What!?" She said as she saw a wadded muddy shirt in a rock hole a pair of boots sat next to the shirt.  In the dirt was scratched 'you’ve been had sweetheart.' She wiped away the note furiously as she scolded herself for not seeing the signs.  She then took deep breaths as she tried to relocate the scent, it was back by the river moving away from her.  She smiled as the thrill of the hunt began anew, I'm beginning to like this kid. She thought as she backtracked toward the river.

.................

Cynthia arrived back at the river but found Alex's sent fading.  She quickly realized he was masking his scent in attempt to buy time.  She looked around the river for anything that would mask his scent, the only ideal camouflage was the mud.  She inspected the mud finding it sifted as her prey applied it to himself, she took in the scent of the mud hoping to catch a similar sent moving in the forest.  Cynthia skilled as she found the same sent moving it was over the cliff, she extended her wings as she flew over the steep climb.  She continued to track the smell as it moved into the forest over the cliff.  Got you. She grinned as she approached her fleeing prey.

..................

Alex ran through the woods, he could have sworn he heard the beating of wings nearby.  He still hadn't thought about his next step after he made it over the cliff.  Alex could hear heavy footsteps approaching  damn. He thought as he quickly looked for a place to hide.

...................

Cynthia started to crouch as she neared her prey, she kept her eyes peeled for movement as she tracked the final location of Alex's smell.  She reached a clearing filled with dozens of hiding spots, the smell had filled this area but continued no further.  He's here. She thought as she excitedly looked for her next meal.

.....................

Alex hid inside a pile of hollow trees, it was no doubt that she would find him he only hoped to delay it for as long as possible.  He could hear her close by, the ground rustled her scales moved over the dry ground.

"Come out my friend."  She coaxed as she searched an edge of the clearing.  Cynthia could hear Alex breathing she found the sound coming from the pile of dead logs, "It's quite cold out don't you think.  I have a warm place for you to rest." She picked up the logs as if they were matches, she searched each one until, "Aha got you." She exclaimed as she reviled his hiding place, before Alex could make a break for it a blue tail wrapped itself around him. Lifting him into the air halting his escape.

"Nice game."  She said smiling at her catch.

"Damn I thought I was in the clear when you left for my diversion." Alex said struggling to get free of her tails grasp.

"You almost did but you can't beat a dragons hunger." She said smiling at her prey.  "Now for me to claim my prize."  She lifted Alex over open maw her tongue waiting to catch her snack.  He felt the warm wet tongue wrap around his body as she sealed him inside her mouth blocking out the light.  Cynthia engorged in his flavor as her taste buds nearly exploded from overload, it took her a few minutes to gather herself and begin the walk back toward the oak tree.  Alex could only feel the warm mouth encase him as her head began to sway when she walked.  While she walked she couldn't help but play with Alex her tongue poking and moving him around in her mouth.

..................

Alex felt the ground as he was released from Cynthia's mouth, he stood up drenched head to toe in saliva.  He then felt a warm foul air blow over him threatening to knock him down.  When the breeze ceased he heard Cynthia say,  "There now you look presentable."  Alex felt his shirt noticing it was dry.

"Presentable for what?"  He asked feeling his dry clothes.

"Your birthday party."  He looked hot to see they were standing on the edge of his backyard woods looking at his friends who were ready to celebrate his birthday.  There where large tables set filled with food, most of the guests had arrived.  He could see the towering frames of Embyr and the other members of the dragon council.  Tyus and Sterling were standing among the crowd of giants, they where all awaiting his arrival unaware he was a mere stone throw away.

"Come on, it's time for a party."  Cynthia said nudging him forward with her snout.  She handed the Black Terror over to Alex who took it eagerly as he went to greet his friends.  Once they stepped out in full view of the towering dragons they were greeted by happy welcomes and friendly meetings between Cynthia and the other guest, both eager to learn about the new arrival.

"Hurry up already I want to get a slice of that cake."  Crystal said in her loud voice.  Everyone began to start the party as they started to head in the direction of the banquet tables..........

.....................................
